The “war on drugs” is a rationale by which the American armed forces justify an enormous military budget and involves arms sales and training to military groups in Central American countries. In countries such as Colombia and Bolivia, military groups, in joint efforts with paramilitary forces (which are unofficially associated, therefore ensuring impunity) forcibly displace, torture, and “disappear” peasants whose only viable livelihood is growing coca (not to be confused with cocaine, which can be extracted from coca leaves). The only losers in the “war on drugs” are human beings.
